Philanthropy
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society seeks to cure lukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, and myeloma, and to improve the lives of patients and their families. The society invests donations in 200 researchers and scientific conferences, educational materials, and support groups for patients and their families. Phi Kappa Sigma supports The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society through a variety of fundraisers and awareness events.
Our spring 2007 pledge class raffled off a gift basket filled with $100 in scratch-off lottery tickets in our most recent effort, which raised hundreds of dollars in support of this worthy cause.
Habitat for Humanity
Since 1976, Habitat for Humanity has lead the effort in addressing poverty housing. Houses are built for those in need for no profit, and with no interest. Over 5,100,000 Americans are forced to pay half their income for housing, or live in overcrowded conditions, or in houses with severe deficiencies. Over two billion people worldwide live in poverty housing.
You can support habitat for humanity by donating online, or by helping with a local building project. When they have a project, the local Racquette Valley chapter and the Malone chapter will be seeking volunteers, especially people with experience building houses.
Donate Blood, Save Lives!
Many people expect to recieve blood if they need it, but don't consider where that blood will come from. We run two to three blood drives each semester (usually spaced 8 weeks apart, the minimum time to wait between blood donations) with the Adirondack Seaway & Park Regional Blood Collection, Inc. Donating blood to a regional service means that it will be more easily available to people who need it in the area.
Donating blood can save a life in need. Statistics show that 25% or more of us will need blood transfusions some time in our life - and the amount of transfusions worldwide increases by 9% every year!
Relay for Life
Phi Kappa Sigma also sponsors a team every year for Relay for Life, a 12 hour walk to honor those who have fought cancer, raise awareness about it, and raise money to research treatments and cures. Donate here! For more information on the groups that this supports, visit the American Cancer Society, the Cancer Action Network, and the Cancer Survivors Network.
